A Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus vespilloides) is visiting the flower of a Phalaenopsis violacea hybrid. Full size view please!
These insects belong to the most interesting species, due to their behavior. For reproduction a Burying Beetle searches for a suitable carcass, for instance of a mouse or a small bird. As soon it has found one it sends out special pheromone signals in order to attract a partner. Together, they completely bury the carrion and form an underground chamber around it, wherein the eggs are laid. The beetles, however, don't leave now: in fact, the parents stay with their young larvae, feeding them until they are able to feed themselves from the preserved carcass.
