Prince of Orange
Tritonia crocata looks very much like a freesia, except for its exceptional orange color. Like many other bulbous plants, this species is native to the renosterveld in the southern Cape region in South Africa. It is easy to grow in a cool greenhouse (maybe also on the windowsill - but I haven't tried this yet), propagates well and flowers reliably every year in late spring. :aww:

Bavaria Blue
There are many varieties of Phlox subulata, most of them with really striking colors that can dominate a whole garden at flowering time, especially when the plants form large cushions. :wow: In combination with more delicate plants, however, those flashy phloxes remind me of a squad of plant hooligans ... :P For such purposes I prefer more decent color combinations, such as this variety 'Bavaria Blue', presenting white flowers with a blue eye in the center. ;)

Synaesthesia
Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation', one of our four lilacs, is now in bloom! :aww: Whenever our lilacs are flowering they fill the garden with their wonderful fragrance, especially in the evening when the air is still warm and humid, after a typical spring day in April with sun and some rain. It is a shame that I cannot send this perfume via WWW to you ... but those who have already experienced this sensation will always associate it with lilac - and never forget it. :)

American Beauty X
I like Erythronium, commonly called fawn lily or trout lily, very much. Among them, Erythronium revolutum 'Johnsonii' is maybe my favorite. The mahogany fawn lily is native to the west coast of North America. The plant is really a little gem, like a small lily, with its pink lily flowers proudly presented above the dark marbled leaves in April. :aww:

American Beauty IX
Phlox caespitosa, commonly called tufted phlox, is native to a large area in the western part of North America: from British Columbia in the north through the Great Basin to New Mexico in the south. Despite of its wide range of distribution, it is rather touchy in the garden, so only its subspecies Phlox caespitosa ssp. pulvinata, sometimes considered as a species of its own, is more frequently cultivated. This plant is not easy, as well, since it demands a special soil consisting of fine granite gravel, with a small addition of humus. Once established, however, it is a well-behaved, mat-forming phlox with masses of beautiful, delicately colored flowers in April. :aww:
